Criterium
Hove Park
3rd August 2001

Fortunately the weather had taken a turn for the better for the criterium in Hove Park on Friday.  The circuit was 1.85 km / 1.15 miles around, generally well-surfaced and ran up one side of the park and down the other, so was far from flat.  I would imagaine that the course was effectively flat-out for all but the fastest machines, though a little caution was needed on the final bend, having as it did a bump in the middle of the track.  Some terrific racing, but unfortunately three crashes of varying severity...

The races were run on a heats - semis - final basis.  The first five riders from each heat (with the exception of Heat 3, which was the Ladies, Juniors and Dennis race) went through to the semi-final, with the next fastest thirty on time also going through.  At least, that was the theory, though Phil Wray and I couldn't get the numbers to add up no matter how many times we counted them... The first five in each semi-final qualified for the final, plus the next fifteen on time.  Rosmarie Bühler decided she'd had enough, so we offered Sean Costin a run.  He also declined, so Ian Humphries got the nod.
