Hove Promenade

Down to the seaside for the sprints, run from west to east along Hove Prom.  Although it was quite sunny, a brisk breeze blowing off the sea made it rather chilly for those of us crouching over the computer all day.  We did get at least one time for everyone in the end, though I know a few times were still missed.  Frederik van de Walle steadfastly maintains that his 10.14 second clocking was way too fast, and Knud Jahnke reckons that the speed for his first run was 10 km/h too high.  A cracking performance from 15 year old Francis Mears, holding third place in Dave Marsh's veteran Vector copy until just before the end...

...when Ian Chattington took his second run, his first having failed to to show up on the timekeepers' machinery.  Initially declining to run because of the wind, he was persuaded to have a go and promptly banged in the only sub-10 second run of the day to snatch the win at the last gasp.  A surprise in the Ladies' class, with Rosmarie Bühler being beaten by Corinne van Noordenne, who at first refused to believe it.

The "Surprise Guests" were the five? six? seven? person crew of the Rowing Machine, a German-built instrument of torture which had run in one of the original Aspro events back in the early Eighties, and having its final outing before taking up residence in a museum.  Four wheels, two rows of galley slaves and a helmsman perched out abaft the rear axle, steering with a wheel.  They just edged out young Pieter van Dyck, but then there were a lot more of them.
