Notes:
  1. The UCI does not sanction records for durations > 1 hour. Nor are their men’s and women’s records consistent – men do 1 km and 4 km, women do 500 m and 3 km. Bloody daft if you ask me…
  2. RTTC = Road Time–Trial Council – the governing body of time-trialling in the United Kingdom
  3. UMCA = Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association – US-based organisation
  4. Performances denoted by "HPV" were mainly at the World HPV Championships / European HPV Championships / International Human-Powered Speed Championships for that year
  5. Performances denoted by "BHPC" were at BHPC Championship events
  6. Performances denoted by "CV" were at the CycleVision event, held annually in Lelystad, The Netherlands
  7. "w" – denotes a performance by a female person of the opposite sex
  8. All recumbents in the above can be assumed to have some variety of tail fairing except where denoted by "u/f" – 1997 World Championships. Or "f", for a couple of time-trial results
  9. A "Y" in the "ALT?" column denotes a performance at an altitude > 700m above sea level. Note also that Lelystad is ~7m below sea level.
  10. The Hour performances in Ghent 2000, and Bram Moens’ 1994 Bordeaux run were proper record attempts. Other HPV performances will, in general, have been from competition, so such delights as wind speed and drafting cannot be ruled out… UMCA and RTTC rules forbid drafting.
  11. UCI 200m times are set on short velodromes during sprint races. Drafting and the use of the gradient of the track are part and parcel of track sprinting, so results are not strictly comparable with HPV sprints held on flat courses
  12. Frederik van de Walle says that his time in Brighton was not correct.  In that case, the winner was Edwin van Vugt, whose best run was 10.70 seconds - 67.29 km/h / 41.82 mph
  13. If I can find the times from the 1996 European HPV Championships (Leicester, UK) or the 1995 World HPV Championships (Lelystad, The Netherlands), I’ll put them in. If anyone’s got any results for other HPV championships, or other road records where HPV's / recumbents and upright bikes can be directly compared, or corrections / additions / whatever, please send ‘em to legs_larry@yahoo.com
  14. Chris Boardman did a 17:55 "10" in 1995, which equates to 33.49 mph / 53.88 km/h, but this is allegedly unofficial.  I have no idea why...
  15. When Bram Moens set his Trondheim-Oslo record, the weather was very poor, and he was riding solo.  Recumbents have subsequently been banned from this event, which is not a race, no Sir!
  16. Beryl Burton’s 12 hour time trial record was, at the time it was set, an outright RTTC record, thereby promoting the late Mrs. Burton to the position of Greatest Female Athlete Of All Time Bar None Ever, in this writer’s opinion. It is said that when she overtook the men’s record holder, she slowed to his pace for a moment, leaned over and said "Eh up, lad! Want a Dolly Mixture?" before speeding off into the distance J
