From the "Los Angeles Times":
Carson, Los Angeles, 3 October - A new world speed record for solo unpaced bicycles was set at the 1982 International Human Powered Vehicle Championships by a British entry, the Avatar Bluebell.  After a 2000 meter flying start pilot Tim Gartside of the Nosey Ferret Racing Team pedalled his mount through a 200 meter sprint at 51.919 mph, taking first place and upsetting the long reign of the previous champion, the American Vector.  At a subsequent 4000 meter velodrome pursuit race on San Diego on 9 October Bluebell put the icing on the cake with another 1st place, crossing the finish line nearly a lap ahead of the Vector.
